     Between 1936 and 1938, the Federal Writers' Project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) interviewed more than two thousand former slaves in seventeen states, with a goal to preserve first-person accounts of the experience of slavery in the United States.
 
     Although the project had methodological limitations (see Norman R. Yetman's Slave Narratives: An Introduction to the WPA Slave Narratives) and there has been debate over the scholarly value of the narratives, they nonetheless represent an invaluable resource for African American heritage research (see the bibliography at Teaching Slavery from the College of Charleston's Carolina Lowcountry and the Atlantic World program).
 
     The WPA Slave Narratives remain an unparalleled collection of African American family oral history, as so many of the respondents were asked for the names and life histories of their family members, and the names of final and previous slaveholders.
